Hydraulic Systems: Common Failures and How We Fix Them
- Slow or weak operation:: Often indicates low fluid level, pump wear, or internal bypass
- Jerky or erratic movement:: Typically caused by air in the system or a faulty control valve
- Overheating:: Can indicate a blocked cooler, excessive internal leakage, or incorrect fluid viscosity
- External leaks:: Seal failure is common after heat cycles or when machines sit unused for extended periods
- Unusual noise:: Cavitation in a pump sounds like gravel in a tin — address it immediately
Hydraulic failures are one of the most common workshop jobs we see. We outline the most frequent causes, warning signs to watch for, and how we approach diagnosis.
Why Hydraulics Fail
Hydraulic systems operate under high pressure with tight tolerances. Contamination, wear, heat, and improper maintenance are the four main causes of failure — and they're often interrelated.
Contamination is the number one killer of hydraulic systems. Particles as small as 10 microns can cause accelerated wear in pumps, valves, and cylinders. Water contamination — even small amounts — causes corrosion and reduces the lubricating properties of the fluid.
Warning Signs to Watch For
Hydraulic Hose Repairs — While You Wait
At the moment, our main hydraulic service is hose repairs. If you've got a broken or leaking hydraulic hose, bring it in and we'll get it sorted while you wait. It's a fast, practical solution that gets you back to work with minimal downtime.
If you're experiencing other hydraulic issues, get in touch and we can discuss what options are available.
